How Does Titanium Dioxide Photocatalysis Work?

Titanium dioxide photocatalysis was discovered in 1967 through research at the University of Tokyo. When exposed to light, titanium dioxide reacts with oxygen and moisture in the air, generating reactive oxygen species and hydroxyl radicals. These reactive species oxidise and break down organic substances they come into contact with—including bacteria, viruses, VOCs and odour-causing compounds—or render them inactive.
